In summary the device is a solid replacement for a regular Windows laptop and a great replacement if you use a Mac today. There are a couple of remedies for this which I'll cover later. When using the general OS or applications this isn't a big deal but you have to remember that the touchscreen doesn't allow for very precise pointing which can make opening webpages a bit of a challenge. The biggest challenge in using the iPad as a laptop replacement is getting used to having to touch the screen to navigate. Currently the iPad has no native support for a Bluetooth or wired mouse (and probably won't according to Apple). I would definitely recommend the Apple Bluetooth keyboard for extended typing (such as with this blog). In portrait mode the keys are a little cramped but in landscape mode, propped on your lap I can type as fast as I would on a regular laptop. If you have an iPhone already and are comfortable with it then the iPad onscreen keyboard will be an improvement for you. Boot time is instantaneous as opposed to the better than 30 seconds resuming from hibernation and close to 2 minute from a cold boot on my laptop.Ī lot's been said about the keyboard but here are my two cents. I have as yet to get an error message telling me my device is low on memory or to have applications appear to be more sluggish, a common complaint on a traditional laptop.

One big advantage of the iPhone OS over Windows 7 is the fact that you don't have to manage memory. The OS and application appear to open/close fast given the specs for the device. The Apple A4 chipset in the iPad equals if not rivals the Netbook category. Hands down I would say the S-10 is one of the best pure Netbook devices on the market for size, weight and power. I used to carry an Lenovo S10 with the Intel Atom processor. Due to the glossy screen it picks up a lot of reflection which makes it difficult to read. Outside in sunlight is perhaps the weakest environment for the iPad. In low light situations you can adjust down the brightness or it'll come across as too bright. I keep mine at about 40% of maximum brightness and that seems to be just right. Unlike most laptop devices which appear dim and dingy the iPad display is vibrant and rich as just about any brightness level. The screen on the iPad is comparable with that on most Netbook devices from a size perspective. I'd suggest going to or for a detailed review. If you want to use your wireless keyboard and mouse at the same time, you will need to install BTStack Keyboard. It allows you to connect any bluetooth mouse to your iPad.
